PARENT TIP... Use fewer words when your child is overwhelmed
When a child is already frustrated, upset, distracted, or overloaded, a long explanation can become one more thing their brain has to process. In those moments, simpler directions often work better.
Instead of: “Go upstairs, get your folder, bring your pencil, sit at the table, and finish the page before you play,” try one step at a time: “Please get your folder.” Then move to the next step when that is finished.
This is not lowering expectations. It is changing how the expectation is delivered so the child can actually follow it. Once your child is calm and organized, you can go back to longer directions and more independence.
