RESOURCE / ACTIVITY... Use Audiobooks Alongside Print
Audiobooks can be a powerful learning tool, especially for children who understand stories and information at a higher level than they can currently decode independently. Listening supports vocabulary, comprehension, background knowledge, and enjoyment of books.
If possible, let your child follow along in a print or digital copy while listening. You can also pause occasionally to talk about a character, new word, prediction, or favorite part.
Audiobooks are not a replacement for explicit reading instruction, but they can give children access to ageappropriate ideas and stories while their reading skills are still developing.
