What to Try When... your child cannot sit still for homework
Understanding your learner: Movement can be a form of regulation. Some children focus better when they are standing, fidgeting appropriately, changing position, or getting short movement breaks. Requiring a perfectly still body may use up attention that could otherwise go toward the learning task.
What to try: Experiment with standing at a counter, sitting on the floor, using a clipboard, doing a few problems and then moving, or pairing practice with safe movement. Set clear limits so movement supports the task rather than replacing it.
Watch the result: does the child return to work more successfully? If yes, the movement is serving a purpose. The goal is engaged learning, not a particular sitting posture.
