RESOURCE / ACTIVITY... Grocery Store Math

The next time you shop, give your child one small math job. Younger children can count produce, find a certain number of items, compare which group has more, or identify numbers on signs. Older elementary students can estimate a total, compare unit prices, figure out how much change they would receive, or calculate the cost of two or three items.

You do not need to quiz them through the entire store. One or two quick questions is plenty. Real-world math helps children understand why number sense, money, addition, subtraction, multiplication, estimation, and measurement matter.
